In Montreal you do not choose your moving date: the lease chooses it. Most leases end on June 30th, and the entire city changes address the next day. It is not a picturesque tradition, it is a logistics constraint — and it can be prepared for.
What runs out on July 1st is not time
It is equipment and helping hands. Trucks are booked months ahead, moving crews are fully committed, and boxes thin out in stores during the last week of June. On the day itself, what stops people is almost never planning: it is having nothing to pack into.
Book the equipment before the hands
It is counter-intuitive, and it is the order that works. You can move without a truck by making three trips; you cannot pack without containers. So equipment gets booked first, as soon as the date is known — meaning when you sign the new lease, not in June.
A schedule that fits in four lines
- When you sign the lease — book the bins and the truck
- One month out — sort room by room, starting with what you will not use this summer
- One week out — pack everything except the kitchen and the bathroom
- The night before — one bin for the first evening: sheets, chargers, coffee, toilet paper
A parking permit is requested, not improvised
Most boroughs issue temporary parking permits for a move, and the request has to be made in advance. Without one, the truck parks two streets away and every bin gains a hundred metres of carrying. It is the formality people forget fastest, and pay for hardest.
On the day, protect the route
The Montreal outdoor staircase is beautiful and treacherous: narrow treads, a tight turn, a low railing. Clear it completely, lay cardboard or a tarp along the indoor route, and keep one hand free going up. A load carried with both hands, with your feet out of sight, is the leading cause of falls that day.
And if you miss the window
Nothing is lost. Availability opens up, especially on the dates around the 1st: June 28th or July 3rd cost less and can be booked later. If your lease gives you two days of overlap, those are the two most useful days of your move.
